Somebody asked me for my opinion on the news that many people are in for a tax bombshell from HMRC. My first reply was that if you owe it, you owe it and tax has to be paid, but for the average working person it is of course news they could do without. One hopes that HMRC will be flexible, as after all, it is their computer that caused the error. The good news is that at last we seem to have a computer system that is fit for purpose and will increase the tax yield. How on earth HMRC will find a way to motivate their staff to run it properly is another matter entirely.
So, the doomsayers are talking about interest rates at 8%. Sometimes I believe that by sticking one’s neck out so much and going to the extreme it is done so they can say “we told you so”. If it doesn’t come to pass – well nobody will remember and they’ll tell you that a prediction of 8% interest rates was only a scenario. By the way, have these prophets of doom taken any actions to protect themselves? If so, tell us and we’ll give your views more credence. As somebody who runs a debt advice charity the thought of rates at 3% worries me – never mind 8%. Even 3% is curtains for a substantial number of householders. For them it is the beginning of financial armageddon.
So somebody was thinking about abolishing free milk for kiddies then? I don’t know about the wisdom of abolishing milk but I do know about the wisdom of abolishing quangos and red tape for small businesses. So, Mr Cameron and partners, whilst you’re in the mood for abolishing stuff keep up the momentum and abolish more red tape to free up us SMEs so we can drive growth and innovation.
So our incoming administration under Mr Cameron’s command has pledged to make it easier to start a business. I am flummoxed- it is one of the easiest places in the world to that already. What he needs to do is shred all the red tape that Gordon Brown tied business up with and to put two fingers up to meddling Eurocrats in Brussels who sit cloistered in their gravy train with no idea of the real world. Nonetheless, whilst a more friendly approach to SMEs is appreciated it makes you wonder how come they don’t realise what it’s like at the sharp end of UK plc.
The not so eagerly awaited changes to company formation are nearly upon us. Companies Act 2006 is a major upheaval and it will be interesting to see how some of the cheap and nasty formation agents deal with it. I suspect that much of the trouble will only come out in the wash next year. One thing is clear – change creates opportunity , and some people are going to be ripped off well and truly , either through bad advice or by excessive charges as a result of the fog of confusion. Our prices will be subject to revision but at least our customers are going to get a gold plated and bulletproof set of Articles drawn up by a pukka firm of solicitors. So the surveys are telling us that people are in favour of government spending cuts. One reason we got into the mess we are in is because people lived beyond their means with debt they could not afford to service. It follows therefore that if people cannot survive financially neither can the government. Shame it is taking so long to wake up and smell the coffee. So now Brown and Darling can pretend to show leadership without looking behind themselves because they know that it won’t rattle the public too much. Doesn’t matter lads – it’s too late and hopefully you will both be in opposition this time next year. NOTE TO MARC – There was no date set on original entry
