Four steps to choosing a company name

Step 1

You can purchase one of our ready-made (off the shelf) company names. If you want to make up the name yourself proceed to step 2.

Step 2

You should make sure that the name you want will not obviously annoy another existing business with a similar name, however large or small they may be. There are no guarantees but common sense should be used.

Please note that if your company is set up with a name that is very close to an existing name and the existing party objects to Companies House within 12 months of your company being registered, you may be forced to change your name, which may be costly and cause you other problems. There is no right of appeal if you are directed to change your company name.

In any event if your business name is deemed by another party to be damaging to their business (whether or not they are a limited company) they may pursue you through the courts under an action for "passing off." This is very costly and inconvenient.

Step 3

Check that your name does not contain a sensitive word that may delay or prevent the name from being registered.

Step 4

Check the name on the Companies House database.

Please note that indicated availability is not a guarantee of being granted the name and that you should not use your intended name until it is registered.

If the name you choose is available, you will be taken directly to the online order page.
